The Christian life has often been compared to a marathon that requires endurance.  All runners get tired. Many fall along the way. Some fail to get back in the race. That is why one biblical author challenged his readers to run the race that God had set before them with endurance by focusing their eyes on Jesus, the supreme example of our faith (Heb.12:1-2). It sounds so simple … keep your eyes focused on Jesus … but in reality, there are many things that will distract us from staying focused on Jesus and following him courageously. In our lessons, we will observe the growing faith of the Apostle Peter who had a ringside seat to Jesus’ life and ministry for three years and yet had a hard time staying focused on Christ. We will learn what can distract us from faithfully following Christ by observing three occasions when Peter took his eyes off of Christ and focused instead on his past failures, his challenging circumstances, and on others who seemed to have a preferred future.

Session 1: “Failing Forward” (Luke 5:1-11)

Session 2: “Conquering Our Circumstances”  (Matthew 14:22-33)

Session 3: “Leading the Charge” (John 21:1-23)

Dr. Rick EfirdDr. Rick Efird has been a pastor for over 39 years. He served as an associate pastor at Camelback Bible Church for 8 ½ years and as the Lead Pastor of Desert Springs Bible Church until two years ago when he resigned from that position in order to invest more time in developing younger pastors and ministry leaders. He is presently serving in a dual role as the Training and Development Pastor at Desert Springs and as the Director of Church Partnerships at Phoenix Seminary.

Beyond local church ministry, Rick has been a part of Phoenix Seminary from its beginning. He has served as a Board member, Interim President , adjunct faculty member, and mentor to numerous students. He has also participated in short-term missions on four continents. In order to be better equipped to minister to others, Rick has completed a variety of degrees: a B.S. in Biology, a Th.M. and D.Min. in Pastoral Ministry.

Rick and his wife, Emily, celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary in May and are thankful for their two sons, Robb and Sam and their daughter-in-law, Amy, who is married to Sam. To relax, Rick and Emily love taking walks together and spending time with family and friends. Rick also enjoys a variety of outdoor sports: hunting, fishing and golf.
