Discipling Today’s Timothy

Posted January 21, 2015

When writing to Timothy, Paul greets him with the same epithet in both of his letters, “my child.” In these simple words, Paul expresses with love and tenderness how he feels about his beloved young companion.

When Paul met Timothy, he was instantly impressed by the faith the young possessed and invited him to join his missionary journey. Timothy learned from Paul the heart of a leader, the wisdom of a teacher, and the joy of the gospel. While Paul preached the gospel to many, he entered into a special relationship with Timothy to encourage his faith and help him grow up in Christ. Ultimately, Paul made Timothy the trusted leader of the church in Ephesus.

The Great Commission compels all believers to not only share the gospel of Christ Jesus, but to “make disciples.” It is our calling in Christ to baptize new believers and teach them the joy of submitting to the commands of Christ. In submission to Christ, we are truly able to experience the continuing renewal of ourselves in a fallen world.

It is vital to care for the spiritual needs of our teens and provide them with the wisdom, confidence, and strength that faith in the King of kings and Lord of lords should bring.

In January 2015, we launched our Discipleship Groups (D-Groups) for the youth at Camelback. The groups will be separated by age and gender to foster open and honest conversations between students and leaders. We in the Youth Ministry are excited to see how God will work in the lives of the students and begin to foster greater passion and love for Christ.

Our Camelback family can partner with us in two ways. First, pray for our teens and our leaders. The transition from child to adult is a rocky road and these groups will be on the forefront of confronting the temptations and doubts this world presents. Second, if you are passionate about Christ and desire to support younger brothers or sisters growing in faith, please contact me. We would love to see you become a Paul to a Timothy!

I hope to be a light of wisdom and hope as they traverse the many obstacles in between childhood and adulthood." “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.” – I Timothy 4:12
